Spring Car Care Tips

If you live in a colder region of the country, you know the importance of preparing your car for winter weather. But now that winter is over, have you thought about checking your car again? With spring and summer road trips on the horizon, you’ll want to know it’s in tip-top shape.

In honor of National Car Care Month (April), here are some tips to prepare your car for the warmer weather ahead.

Wash your car. Road salt is useful for melting snow and ice, but it can also cause corrosion and rust. Your car’s brake and fuel lines may be especially vulnerable, since they are typically under the car and get more exposure. Find a car wash that treats the undercarriage of the car.

Repair any corrosion or rust spots. This is especially important if your car has seen several heavy winters. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration advises having your car checked for rust and corrosion if it’s more than 8 years old.

Check your tire pressure. In the spring, higher temperatures can increase your tire pressure as the air expands. Always keep your tires inflated to the correct pressure (psi) for your car. You can find this information in your owner’s manual or on the sticker inside your driver’s side doorjamb.

Check your windshield wipers. Worn or damaged wipers can impact visibility in the rain. If you notice streaks, smudges, squeaking, chattering, cracks or tears, replace them. The last thing you need is for your wipers to malfunction in the middle of a spring rainstorm.

Check your battery. Cold weather can strain your car’s battery. You may have even noticed that your car took a bit longer to start in the winter. Checking your battery during the spring can help you identify any issues caused by winter weather. It can also help prepare your car for increased electrical demand in the summer.

By giving your car a little extra TLC now, you’ll be able to plan your next road trip with peace of mind.
